Genesis 16:13

Listen to this article

“And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me?”

This verse is part of the account of Hagar, the maidservant of Sarah, the wife of Abraham. Hagar had been mistreated by Sarah, and she fled from her presence into the wilderness. While she was there, the Angel of the Lord appeared to her and spoke with her. It was during this encounter that Hagar referred to the Lord as “Thou God seest me.”

This verse highlights several significant aspects:

  • The Personal Nature of God:Hagar acknowledges that the Lord has spoken to her directly. Despite her status as a maidservant and a stranger, God saw her and cared enough to interact with her. This reveals the personal nature of God, who is not distant or uninvolved but actively interacts with His creation, even individuals in dire circumstances.
  • God’s Omniscience:Hagar’s statement recognizes that God sees and knows everything. She acknowledges that God is aware of her situation and has taken notice of her distress. This attribute of God’s omniscience emphasizes His all-knowing nature and His awareness of every detail in our lives.
  • God’s Presence and Providence:Hagar expresses astonishment and gratitude by acknowledging that she has seen the one who sees her. This encounter with the Angel of the Lord assures her that God is present with her, even in the wilderness. It serves as a reminder that God’s eyes are always upon His people, providing comfort, guidance, and protection.
  • Recognition of God’s Sovereignty:Hagar’s statement implies a realization of God’s authority and sovereignty. She acknowledges that God sees and takes notice of her actions and the circumstances surrounding her. This recognition reinforces the truth that God is not limited by human understanding or limitations but is in control of all things.

This verse reminds us that God is not distant or uninterested in our lives. He sees us, knows us intimately, and cares for us personally. It encourages us to have faith in His presence, trust in His providence, and acknowledge His sovereignty. We can take comfort in the fact that no matter where we are or what we are going through, God sees us and is actively involved in our lives.
