Genesis 16:3

Posted on 20 July 2023
Listen to this article

“And Sarai Abram’s wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife.”

Context:The story of Genesis 16 begins with Abram (later called Abraham) and Sarai (later called Sarah) living in the land of Canaan. God had promised Abram that he would become the father of a great nation (Genesis 12:2). However, Sarai was barren and had not borne any children.

Sarai’s Plan:After living in Canaan for ten years without any children, Sarai took matters into her own hands. She decided to give her maidservant, Hagar, to Abram as a wife with the hope that she would bear children for them. This was a common cultural practice of that time.

Cultural Context:In ancient times, it was not uncommon for childless wives to provide their maidservants to their husbands as surrogate mothers. This was seen as a way to continue the family line and fulfill the desire for offspring. However, this practice was not aligned with God’s plan for marriage and family.

Sarai’s Impatience:Sarai’s decision to give Hagar to Abram as a wife reveals her impatience and lack of trust in God’s promise. Instead of waiting for God’s timing and relying on His faithfulness, Sarai took matters into her own hands. This action reflects a lack of faith and a desire to manipulate the situation.

Abram’s Response:Abram, though he was the recipient of Sarai’s plan, did not exercise good judgment in accepting Hagar as his wife. He did not seek God’s guidance or question Sarai’s decision. Instead, he went along with Sarai’s plan, which ultimately led to complications and tensions within their household.

Consequences:The result of Sarai’s impatience and Abram’s compliance was the birth of Ishmael through Hagar. This decision caused strife between Sarai and Hagar, as well as complications in their family dynamics. It also set the stage for future conflicts and consequences within the descendants of Abram.

Lessons to Learn:

  • Trusting in God’s Promises:Sarai’s impatience teaches us the importance of trusting in God’s promises and waiting for His timing. God had promised Abram and Sarai that they would have a child, but they took matters into their own hands instead of waiting for God’s fulfillment of His promise.
  • The Consequences of Our Actions:Abram and Sarai’s decision to deviate from God’s plan led to negative consequences. When we act in disobedience to God’s will, we can expect to face the repercussions of our choices. It is essential to seek God’s guidance and align our actions with His Word.
  • Patience and Faith:The story of Genesis 16 serves as a reminder of the importance of patience and faith in our walk with God. It can be tempting to take matters into our own hands when we feel that God’s timing is too slow, but it is crucial to trust in His faithfulness and wait for His perfect plan to unfold.

In summary, Genesis 16:3 demonstrates the consequences of Sarai and Abram’s impatience and lack of trust in God’s promise. It serves as a valuable lesson for us to trust in God’s faithfulness, exercise patience, and align our actions with His will.
