Genesis 16:7

Listen to this article

“And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.”

This verse is part of the narrative of Hagar, who was the maidservant of Sarai (later called Sarah), the wife of Abraham. To gain a deeper understanding, let’s explore the context and significance of this verse.

Context:Genesis 16 recounts the events that occurred when Sarai was unable to bear children, and she gave her maidservant, Hagar, to Abraham as a wife in order to obtain offspring. After Hagar conceived, tensions arose between Sarai and Hagar, resulting in mistreatment and Hagar fleeing from Sarai’s presence. It is in this context that the angel of the LORD finds Hagar by a fountain of water in the wilderness.

The Angel of the LORD:The phrase “angel of the LORD” refers to a divine messenger, often representing the presence and authority of God Himself.

In many instances in the Bible, the “angel of the LORD” is seen as an appearance of God or a pre‑incarnate manifestation of Jesus Christ.

Hagar’s Encounter:Hagar, having fled into the wilderness, encounters the angel of the LORD by a fountain of water. This encounter is significant because it highlights God’s concern for Hagar’s well‑being and His intervention in her situation.

Symbolism of Water:The fountain of water holds symbolic significance in this verse. Water is often associated with life, purification, and renewal. In this barren wilderness, the presence of water is a provision from God, reminding Hagar that He is aware of her circumstances and will provide for her needs.

Way to Shur:The mention of “the way to Shur” indicates the location where Hagar encountered the angel of the LORD. Shur was a region located in the northern part of the Sinai Peninsula. This detail adds geographical context to the narrative.

Overall, Genesis 16:7 showcases God’s compassionate intervention in Hagar’s life. It reveals His attentiveness to the struggles and needs of individuals, even those who may be marginalised or overlooked. Hagar’s encounter with the angel of the LORD emphasises God’s presence, care, and guidance during challenging times. As we study this verse, we can reflect on God’s faithfulness in our own lives, knowing that He sees us in our wilderness experiences and is ready to provide for our needs and offer guidance along the way.
