“Then Sarah denied, saying, I laughed not; for she was afraid. And he said, Nay; but thou didst laugh.”
This verse is a part of the account where three visitors, who are actually angelic beings, appear to Abraham and Sarah. The visitors inform Abraham that Sarah, who was barren, would have a son within a year.
Context:Genesis 18:1-14 In the preceding verses, Abraham encounters these three visitors near the oaks of Mamre. He shows them great hospitality, providing a meal and demonstrating respect. The visitors then promise that Sarah will have a son, which leads to Sarah’s incredulous response.
Sarah’s reaction:In verse 12, Sarah’s initial reaction to hearing she would bear a child is to laugh inwardly. She finds the idea amusing or beyond belief, considering her old age and the fact that both she and Abraham are well beyond childbearing years.
In verse 13, the Lord, who is present among the visitors, addresses Sarah directly, questioning her laughter.
Sarah’s denial:Genesis 18:15 records Sarah’s response to being called out by the Lord. She denies having laughed, possibly out of fear or embarrassment. It highlights her lack of faith in the promise made to her and Abraham. However, the Lord knows the truth, as He sees into the hearts of individuals.
The consequences:In Genesis 18:16-21, the Lord reiterates the promise of Sarah conceiving a son. The visitors then prepare to leave, and Abraham walks with them. The next scene involves the Lord discussing with Abraham His plans to investigate the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah. The passage concludes with the Lord revealing His intentions to Abraham, who pleads for mercy on behalf of any righteous individuals living in those cities.
