Genesis 19:16

Listen to this article

"And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city."

This verse is part of the account of the events surrounding the destruction of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. Prior to this verse, two angels had arrived in Sodom in the form of men, and Lot, the nephew of Abraham, welcomed them into his home and offered them hospitality.

However, the men of Sodom, both young and old, surrounded Lot’s house and demanded that the visitors be brought out to them so that they could have sexual relations with them. Lot, recognizing the wickedness of the men, went outside and tried to reason with them, even offering his own daughters instead. This action, though troubling to modern readers, can be understood as Lot’s desperate attempt to protect the angels under his care.

In the midst of this tense situation, the angels seized Lot, his wife, and his two daughters, taking hold of their hands. The phrase “while he lingered” indicates that Lot hesitated, perhaps not fully comprehending the gravity of the impending judgment. The angels, in their mercy, forcibly brought them out of the city, leading them to safety.

Key Points:This verse reveals a couple of significant points. First, it highlights the angels’ role as agents of God’s mercy and deliverance. Despite the wickedness of Sodom and Gomorrah, God showed compassion and extended mercy to Lot and his family by sending angels to rescue them from the impending destruction.

Second, it serves as a reminder of the urgency to respond to God’s warnings. Lot’s lingering hesitation can be seen as a reflection of his attachment to the city and its sinful ways. His delay could have put his own life and the lives of his family members at risk. Similarly, it is essential for believers to heed God’s warnings and promptly respond, without clinging to the things of this world that may lead to destruction.

Genesis 19:16 showcases God’s mercy and the urgency of responding to His guidance. It also serves as a cautionary reminder to prioritize our spiritual well-being over worldly attachments.
