Genesis 21:12

Listen to this article

“And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.”

This verse is a part of the narrative surrounding the birth of Isaac, the promised son of Abraham and Sarah. It reveals an important interaction between God and Abraham regarding the fate of Ishmael, the son born to Abraham through his wife’s maidservant, Hagar.

In this verse, God instructs Abraham not to be distressed about Hagar and Ishmael, despite Sarah’s earlier insistence that Abraham should cast them out. God acknowledges Sarah’s words and advises Abraham to listen to her. However, the main emphasis of God’s message is that through Isaac, Abraham’s true descendants will be called.

This verse highlights a few significant points:

  • God’s concern for Abraham:Despite Abraham’s affection for Ishmael, God reassures him that He is mindful of the situation and advises him not to be burdened by it.
  • Respect for Sarah’s words:God affirms that Abraham should hearken to Sarah’s voice, indicating the importance of honoring the perspectives and opinions of one’s spouse. God recognizes the authority of the husband as the head of the family but also emphasizes the value of considering the insights and wishes of the wife.
  • The establishment of Isaac’s lineage:God declares that Isaac will be the one through whom Abraham’s descendants will be called. This confirms the fulfillment of God’s promise to bless Abraham with a son from Sarah, who will become the father of a great nation.

This verse also sets the stage for the subsequent events in the lives of Abraham, Sarah, Ishmael, and Isaac, which demonstrate God’s faithfulness to His promises and His sovereign plan for the chosen lineage.
