Genesis 22:17

Listen to this article

“That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies.”

This verse is part of the account of Abraham’s willingness to offer his son Isaac as a sacrifice to God, commonly referred to as the Binding of Isaac. This event serves as a test of Abraham’s faith and obedience to God. Let’s explore the meaning and significance of Genesis 22:17.

In this verse, God is speaking to Abraham after providing a ram as a substitute for Isaac and affirming his faithfulness and blessings upon Abraham and his descendants. Let’s break down the key elements of this verse:

That in blessing I will bless thee:God assures Abraham of His intention to bless him abundantly. This promise conveys God’s favour, protection, and provision for Abraham and his future generations.

And in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore:Here, God promises to increase and multiply Abraham’s descendants. The comparison to the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore signifies an immeasurable number of offspring, emphasizing the magnitude of the blessing.

And thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies:This phrase suggests that Abraham’s descendants will not only multiply in number but also enjoy victories and triumphs over their enemies. The “gate” symbolises the entrance to a city, which, in biblical times, represented power and control. Possessing the gate of one’s enemies implies dominion and authority over those who oppose them.

The significance of Genesis 22:17 lies in the establishment of God’s covenant with Abraham and the fulfilment of His promises. This verse echoes the initial covenant promise made to Abraham in Genesis 12:2-3, where God promised to make him a great nation, bless him, and make his name great. Through the repeated affirmation of these promises, God reinforces His faithfulness and demonstrates His commitment to fulfilling His word.

Moreover, this verse foreshadows the future blessings and multiplication of Abraham’s descendants, which find ultimate fulfilment in the nation of Israel and, for Christians, in the spiritual descendants of Abraham through faith in Jesus Christ (Galatians 3:7-9, 16, 26-29).

In summary, Genesis 22:17 reassures Abraham of God’s blessings and multiplication upon him and his descendants. It affirms the magnitude of his future offspring and their authority over their enemies. This verse serves as a testament to God’s faithfulness and His commitment to fulfilling His promises.
