Genesis 24:28

Listen to this article

“And the damsel ran, and told them of her mother’s house these things.”

Context:Genesis 24 records the account of Abraham’s servant being sent to find a wife for Isaac, Abraham’s son. The servant arrived at the city of Nahor and prayed for a sign from God to identify the woman who would be the suitable bride for Isaac. Rebekah, the granddaughter of Abraham’s brother Nahor, fulfilled the sign by offering water to the servant and his camels. After this, the servant gave her gifts of jewelry, and she hurried to her mother’s house to share the news.

Here are some key points and lessons we can derive from Genesis 24:28:

  • Obedience and faithfulness:Rebekah demonstrated obedience and faithfulness by promptly running to her mother’s house to share the news. She recognised the importance of her encounter with the servant and understood the significance of the gifts she received. Her willingness to act immediately shows her trust in God’s leading.
  • Gratitude and humility:The fact that Rebekah shared the news with her mother’s household reveals her gratitude and humility. Instead of boasting or keeping the information to herself, she acknowledged the role her family would play in this important decision and involved them from the beginning.
  • Respect for parental guidance:Rebekah’s decision to inform her mother’s household indicates her respect for her family and their involvement in the decision-making process. In ancient Near Eastern culture, parental consent was highly valued, especially in marriage arrangements. Rebekah’s actions demonstrate her understanding of this cultural norm and her willingness to honour her family’s guidance.
  • Communication and community:Rebekah’s actions highlight the importance of communication within a community. By sharing the news with her mother’s household, she involved them in the process and sought their input. This emphasises the significance of seeking wisdom and counsel from trusted individuals when making important decisions.
  • God’s providence:Rebekah’s encounter with Abraham’s servant and her subsequent actions reveal God’s providential guidance. God had orchestrated events to lead the servant to Rebekah, and her immediate response demonstrated that she was the chosen woman for Isaac. This passage reminds us of God’s faithfulness in directing our paths and aligning circumstances for His purposes.

Overall, Genesis 24:28 teaches us about obedience, faithfulness, gratitude, humility, respect for parental guidance, the importance of communication and community, and God’s providential leading. It encourages us to trust in God’s guidance in our own lives and involve those around us in important decision-making processes.
