Genesis 25:14

Listen to this article

“And Mishma, and Dumah, and Massa.”

Genesis 25:14 is part of a genealogical list found in the book of Genesis, which details the descendants of Abraham through his wife Keturah. In this verse, the names of three sons of Ishmael are mentioned: Mishma, Dumah, and Massa.

To better understand the significance of this verse, it is important to consider the broader context. Genesis 25:1-6 provides an account of Abraham’s later years and the children he fathered with Keturah after the death of his wife Sarah. These sons, along with Ishmael, were sent away by Abraham to the east while he was still alive, giving them their own inheritance apart from Isaac, the promised son.

Now, let’s briefly explore the names mentioned in Genesis 25:14:

Mishma:Mishma was one of the sons of Ishmael and a grandson of Abraham. The name “Mishma” means “hearing” or “obedience.” While not much else is known about him, this name could suggest the importance of attentive listening and obedience to God’s commands.

Dumah:Dumah is another son of Ishmael. The name “Dumah” means “silence” or “stillness.” This name might convey the idea of contemplation, introspection, or even a state of waiting in silence before God.

Massa:Massa is the third son of Ishmael. The name “Massa” means “burden” or “tribute.” It is possible that this name reflects the idea of responsibility or carrying a burden. It could also refer to the notion of offering tribute or worship to God.

While these names may not have extensive narratives or specific events associated with them in the biblical text, they do provide us with insights into the cultural and linguistic context of the time. Each name carries its own significance and could serve as a reminder of certain principles or values held by the people of that period.

As we explore the Bible, it’s important to remember that not every verse contains explicit teachings or narratives. Some verses, like Genesis 25:14, offer glimpses into historical and genealogical details that help us understand the broader narrative and context of the biblical story.
