Genesis 27:10

Listen to this article

“And thou shalt bring it to thy father, that he may eat, and that he may bless thee before his death.”

Context:Genesis 27 tells the story of Isaac, the son of Abraham, who was preparing to bless his older son Esau before his death. However, Rebekah, Isaac’s wife, overheard the plan and devised a scheme to ensure that their younger son Jacob would receive the blessing instead. In verse 10, Rebekah instructs Jacob to bring the meal she has prepared to his father, so that he may eat and bless him.

The Importance of the Blessing:In biblical times, a father’s blessing held significant meaning and was considered a crucial event in the life of the recipient. The patriarchal blessing was not merely a formality but carried spiritual, emotional, and material implications. It conveyed a sense of authority, inheritance, and divine favour upon the recipient.

Rebekah’s Intervention:Rebekah, favouring Jacob over Esau, took it upon herself to ensure that Jacob received the blessing. She devised a plan to deceive Isaac, who was blind and unaware of her intentions. Rebekah’s actions were driven by her understanding of God’s earlier prophecy that the older would serve the younger (Genesis 25:23). However, instead of trusting in God’s timing and sovereignty, she took matters into her own hands, resorting to deception.

Lessons on Deception:Rebekah’s actions raise ethical and moral questions. While God’s sovereign will to fulfil His promise could have been achieved without Rebekah’s deception, she chose to manipulate the situation. This incident serves as a reminder that our human attempts to fulfil God’s purposes can often lead to negative consequences. It is essential to trust in God’s timing and methods rather than resorting to deceitful practices.

God’s Faithfulness:Despite Rebekah’s actions, God’s plan and purpose prevailed. His promise to Abraham regarding Jacob’s role in the covenant continued to unfold. However, it is important to note that Jacob faced significant consequences as a result of the deception, including strained relationships with his family and years of hardship.

Trusting in God’s Sovereignty:The story of Jacob and Esau reminds us of the importance of trusting in God’s sovereignty. God’s plans are not dependent on human manipulation or deceit. We should learn from Rebekah’s actions and seek to align ourselves with God’s will, trusting in His faithfulness to fulfil His promises in His perfect timing.

In summary, Genesis 27:10 highlights Rebekah’s instructions to Jacob to bring the prepared meal to Isaac so that he may bless him before his death. This verse serves as a starting point for exploring the themes of blessing, deception, and God’s sovereignty in the story of Jacob and Esau.
