Genesis 27:39

Listen to this article

“And Isaac his father answered and said unto him, Behold, thy dwelling shall be the fatness of the earth, and of the dew of heaven from above;”

This verse is part of the narrative of Jacob and Esau, the twin sons of Isaac and Rebekah. In this particular scene, Jacob had deceived his father Isaac and received the blessing that was intended for Esau, the older son. When Esau realized what had happened, he pleaded with his father for a blessing of his own.

Let’s examine this verse and its context to gain a deeper understanding:

The Blessing: In ancient times, a father’s blessing carried significant weight and had profound implications for the recipient. It was a prophetic declaration of favor, prosperity, and divine protection. Isaac’s response to Esau’s request is a form of blessing.

“Thy dwelling shall be the fatness of the earth”: This phrase implies that Esau would enjoy a fertile and prosperous land, with an abundance of resources and blessings. It suggests material prosperity, agricultural abundance, and physical well‑being. Esau’s descendants, the Edomites, did indeed inherit a region with rich soil and favourable conditions for agriculture.

“And of the dew of heaven from above”: This phrase symbolizes the provision of God from above. Dew was crucial in an arid climate like the Middle East, where it would settle on plants during the night and provide essential moisture. This part of the blessing indicates that Esau’s blessings would also come from God’s provision and divine favour.

Symbolic Meaning: Beyond its literal meaning, this verse carries symbolic significance. Esau’s blessings represent earthly abundance and physical prosperity. However, the emphasis on material wealth in this verse should not be seen as an endorsement or approval of Esau’s character or choices. It highlights God’s faithfulness to bless and provide for His people, even when they fall short.

Esau’s Character: It is important to note that Esau, throughout his life, displayed a disregard for his birthright and spiritual heritage. He sold his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of stew (Genesis 25:29‑34). Esau’s priorities were focused on immediate gratification rather than the spiritual blessings associated with the birthright. Consequently, although Esau received a blessing, it was not the primary blessing intended for him.

Divine Providence: Despite Jacob’s deception, God’s providence is evident throughout this narrative. The ultimate purpose of the blessing was to fulfil God’s plan and promise of establishing His chosen people through Jacob’s line. God’s sovereignty is seen in the way He works through imperfect individuals and circumstances to bring about His purposes.
