Genesis 28:4

Posted on 27 July 2023
Listen to this article

“And give thee the blessing of Abraham, to thee, and to thy seed with thee; that thou mayest inherit the land wherein thou art a stranger, which God gave unto Abraham.”

Context:Genesis 28:4 is part of the narrative surrounding Jacob’s journey to find a wife from his father’s family. At this point in the story, Isaac, Jacob’s father, blesses Jacob and sends him away to Paddan-aram, the homeland of his mother’s family, in order to find a wife.

Blessing of Abraham:The verse mentions the “blessing of Abraham” that Isaac gives to Jacob. This refers to the covenant that God made with Abraham, which included promises of land, descendants, and blessings (Genesis 12:2-3; 17:4-8). By passing on this blessing, Isaac is reaffirming the covenant promises to Jacob.

Inheritance of the Land:Isaac reminds Jacob that part of the blessing he is receiving includes the inheritance of the land promised to Abraham. This land refers to the land of Canaan, which would eventually become the promised land for the Israelite people.

Stranger in the Land:The verse also acknowledges that Jacob is a stranger in the land at this point. It highlights the fact that Jacob is leaving the familiar surroundings of his home and venturing into a foreign land where his ancestors came from. This foreshadows the journey and experiences Jacob will have during his time in Paddan-aram.

God’s Faithfulness:This verse underscores God’s faithfulness in keeping His promises. The blessing of Abraham was initially given to Abraham, then passed down to Isaac, and now to Jacob. It demonstrates how God remains committed to His covenant promises across generations.

Application:

  • God’s promises are generational:The blessing of Abraham passing down to Jacob reminds us that God’s promises are not limited to a single individual but are often intended to extend through generations. This highlights the importance of faithfulness and passing on our spiritual heritage to future generations.
  • Trusting God in the unknown:Jacob’s journey to Paddan-aram was a step into the unknown, leaving behind familiar territory. Similarly, we may find ourselves in unfamiliar situations or facing uncertain futures. Genesis 28:4 reminds us to trust in God’s faithfulness and His guidance, even in times of transition and uncertainty.
  • Remembering our spiritual heritage:Jacob’s story emphasizes the significance of recognizing and appreciating our spiritual heritage. Just as Jacob was reminded of the promises given to his ancestors, we should also remember the faithfulness of God in our own lives and acknowledge the impact of previous generations in shaping our faith.

In summary, Genesis 28:4 captures the passing of the blessing of Abraham from Isaac to Jacob, highlighting the promise of land and God’s faithfulness to future generations. It encourages us to trust God’s guidance in uncertain times and appreciate our spiritual heritage.
