Genesis 30:35

Posted on 27 July 2023
Listen to this article

“And he removed that day the he goats that were ringstraked and spotted, and all the she goats that were speckled and spotted, and every one that had some white in it, and all the brown among the sheep, and gave them into the hand of his sons.”

This verse is part of the narrative of Jacob’s dealings with his father-in-law Laban. To understand the significance of this particular verse, we need to examine the broader context.

In Genesis 30, Jacob has been working for Laban for several years, tending to his flock of sheep and goats. Jacob had initially worked for Laban in order to marry his daughters, Rachel and Leah. However, Laban deceived Jacob by giving him Leah instead of Rachel as his wife, and Jacob ended up marrying both Leah and Rachel.

The verse you mentioned takes place after Jacob and Laban had made an agreement regarding the division of the flock. Jacob proposes a plan to Laban:in which he would keep any sheep or goats that were speckled, spotted, or with white in their coats as his wages. Laban agrees to the proposal, and they establish a system for breeding the animals.

In this verse, Jacob executes his plan by separating the specific goats and sheep described: the ringstraked and spotted he goats, the speckled and spotted she goats, those with some white in them, and the brown among the sheep. He then entrusts these animals to the care of his sons, effectively separating them from the rest of Laban’s flock.

This separation of the animals was part of Jacob’s strategy to increase his own wealth and provide for his growing family. He believed that by breeding these specific animals, he would have a greater number of speckled and spotted offspring, which would ultimately contribute to his own prosperity.

It’s important to note that this chapter of Genesis is not only about Jacob’s strategic breeding practices but also contains a deeper spiritual lesson. Throughout the narrative, we see God’s providence at work, ensuring that Jacob prospers despite Laban’s attempts to deceive and manipulate him. God blesses Jacob’s efforts, and through divine intervention, the animals that Jacob breeds produce a considerable increase in his own flock.

Genesis 30:35 reminds us:that even in challenging circumstances, when others may seek to exploit or cheat us, we can trust in God’s faithfulness. Jacob’s success was not solely a result of his own strategies and efforts but ultimately came from God’s blessing and providence in his life.

This verse also illustrates the importance of faithfulness and integrity:in our dealings with others. While Jacob was wise in his approach to breeding the animals, he did not resort to dishonesty or trickery to gain an advantage over Laban. He worked within the agreed-upon terms, separating the animals according to Laban’s specifications.

In conclusion, Genesis 30:35:highlights Jacob’s strategic breeding practices and his separation of specific animals as part of his agreement with Laban. It reminds us of God’s faithfulness and the importance of integrity in our dealings with others.
