Genesis 31:7

Listen to this article

“And your father hath deceived me, and changed my wages ten times; but God suffered him not to hurt me.”

This verse is part of the story of Jacob and his relationship with his father-in-law, Laban. To fully understand Genesis 31:7, it is important to explore the context leading up to this verse.

Jacob had been working for Laban for many years, tending to his flock. Laban had two daughters, Leah and Rachel, and Jacob had married both of them. During his time working for Laban, Jacob had experienced numerous challenges and difficulties.

In the preceding verses, Jacob recounted to his wives, Rachel and Leah, how Laban had changed his wages multiple times. Each time Jacob and Laban negotiated an agreement, Laban would alter the terms to his own advantage. Despite these manipulative tactics, Jacob acknowledged that God had intervened and protected him from being harmed by Laban.

This verse highlights several important aspects:

  • Deception and manipulation:Jacob acknowledges that Laban had deceived him and altered his wages multiple times. Laban’s actions were unfair and dishonest, reflecting his character.
  • God’s protection:Jacob recognizes God’s providence and intervention in his life. Despite Laban’s attempts to harm him through deceitful practices, God did not allow Laban to prevail.
  • Trust in God’s faithfulness:Jacob’s statement reveals his trust in God’s ability to protect and provide for him. He acknowledges that God’s intervention prevented Laban from causing him harm.

This verse serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness and His ability to protect His people, even in the face of deceit and manipulation. It demonstrates the importance of relying on God’s guidance and trusting in His provision, especially in challenging circumstances.

As we reflect on Genesis 31:7, we can draw lessons from Jacob’s experience. We should strive to maintain integrity in our dealings with others and trust that God is always watching over us. Even when faced with difficult situations and people who may seek to deceive or harm us, we can find comfort in knowing that God is in control and will ultimately protect and provide for us according to His perfect plan.
