Genesis 32:7

Posted on 28 July 2023
Listen to this article

“Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands.”

Context:The verse is part of the story of Jacob’s return to the land of Canaan after living with his father-in-law Laban for several years. Jacob had left his homeland due to his brother Esau’s anger towards him for obtaining their father’s blessing through deceit. Now, as Jacob approached Canaan, he learned that Esau was coming to meet him with four hundred men. Fearing for his safety and the safety of his family, Jacob became greatly afraid and distressed.

Fear and Distress:Jacob’s reaction to the news of Esau’s approach highlights the deep fear and distress he experienced. This fear was rooted in his past actions and the consequences he expected to face from Esau’s anger. It is important to note that fear is a natural human emotion, and even biblical figures like Jacob faced it. Jacob’s response serves as a reminder that even when we encounter fear and distress, we can turn to God for strength and guidance.

Strategic Planning:In response to his fear, Jacob divided the people, flocks, herds, and camels into two groups or bands. This strategic move was intended to mitigate potential losses. By dividing his possessions and family into two separate groups, Jacob hoped that if one group was attacked, the other could escape. This action demonstrates Jacob’s practicality and his efforts to protect what was precious to him.

Trusting in God:While Jacob took practical steps to ensure the safety of his family and possessions, it is crucial to note that he didn’t rely solely on his own strategies. Throughout the larger narrative, Jacob’s faith in God is evident. His decision to divide his people and possessions into two bands was accompanied by prayer and seeking God’s guidance. Jacob’s actions demonstrate a balance between practical planning and reliance on God’s providence.

Application:Genesis 32:7 encourages us to trust in God when we face fear and distress. Like Jacob, we may encounter challenging situations where fear threatens to overwhelm us. In such moments, we can follow Jacob’s example by taking practical steps to address our concerns while also seeking God’s guidance and trusting in His providence. Additionally, this verse reminds us that fear and distress are part of the human experience, but through faith in God, we can find courage and strength to face our fears.

Remember that studying the Bible in its entirety and exploring the surrounding verses and context is crucial for a comprehensive understanding.
