Genesis 34:11

“And Shechem said unto her father and unto her brethren, Let me find grace in your eyes, and what ye shall say unto me I will give.”

Context:Genesis 34 tells the story of Dinah, the daughter of Jacob and Leah, who was violated by Shechem, a prince of the Hivites. This incident caused great distress to Dinah’s family, particularly her brothers, who were angered by the offense. In verse 11, Shechem addresses Dinah’s father, Jacob, and her brothers, appealing for their favour and promising to do whatever they ask of him. Here are some key points to consider in a Bible study on Genesis 34:11:

Sin and its consequences:The account of Shechem’s violation of Dinah highlights the consequences of sin. Shechem’s actions were sinful, resulting in pain, dishonour, and conflict for both families involved. This serves as a reminder of the far‑reaching effects of our choices and actions.

Seeking grace and reconciliation:Despite the gravity of Shechem’s sin, he humbly approaches Dinah’s family, expressing a desire to find grace in their eyes. This shows the importance of seeking reconciliation and making amends when we have wronged others. It reflects the biblical principle of seeking forgiveness and restoration.

The power of repentance:Shechem’s willingness to comply with whatever Jacob and his sons require demonstrates an element of repentance. While his motives may be questionable, his words imply a desire to make things right. This highlights the transformative power of genuine repentance and the potential for restoration and forgiveness in relationships.

God’s justice and righteousness:Although the immediate focus of the passage is on human interactions, it is important to remember that God’s justice and righteousness are at work. God’s moral standards and expectations are not compromised by Shechem’s appeal. Ultimately, we see later in the Bible that Jacob’s descendants, the Israelites, were given instructions to remain separate from the Canaanites due to their idolatry and immoral practices.

Lessons for believers today:This passage reminds us of the importance of personal responsibility, accountability, and seeking reconciliation in the face of wrongdoing. It encourages us to pursue righteousness, justice, and forgiveness in our relationships with others, following the principles set forth in the teachings of Jesus Christ.

As with any Bible study, it is important to read the surrounding verses and consider the broader context of the passage to gain a comprehensive understanding of the text. Additionally, consulting trusted commentaries and seeking guidance from spiritual leaders can provide further insights into the meaning and significance of the passage.
