Genesis 35:22

Posted on 28 July 2023
Listen to this article

“And it came to pass, when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father’s concubine: and Israel heard it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve.”

This verse is part of the account of Jacob’s journey back to Bethel:where he had previously made a vow to God. In this particular verse, a significant event takes place involving Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn son.

Reuben, one of Jacob’s twelve sons, committed a grave offense by sleeping with Bilhah, who was one of Jacob’s concubines or secondary wives. This action was highly disrespectful and violated the moral and cultural norms of the time.

It is important to note that the narrative of this incident does not provide explicit details regarding the motive behind Reuben’s actions. However, it is clear that this act was considered a betrayal and a dishonour to his father Jacob:This verse serves as a reminder of the flawed nature of humanity, even within the chosen family of God.

The account highlights the consequences of human sinfulness and the importance of personal responsibility. Reuben’s actions would later have repercussions in the story of Jacob’s blessings to his sons (Genesis 49:3-4).

The incident involving Reuben demonstrates the ongoing struggle between human weaknesses and God’s calling. Despite Reuben’s transgression, he still remained one of the twelve sons of Jacob:and God’s plan for the nation of Israel would continue through his descendants.

Overall, Genesis 35:22 reminds us that even individuals within a chosen family can make grave mistakes and face the consequences of their actions. It underscores the need for repentance, forgiveness, and personal growth in our relationship with God and with one another.
