“For their riches were more than that they might dwell together; and the land wherein they were strangers could not bear them because of their cattle.”
Context:Genesis 36 is a chapter that provides a genealogical account of the descendants of Esau, who is also known as Edom. It traces the lineage of Esau’s descendants and the formation of the nation of Edom. Verse 7 occurs within this genealogy.
The Prosperity of Esau’s Descendants:In verse 7, it is mentioned that the descendants of Esau, the Edomites, became very wealthy. Their riches grew to such an extent that they were unable to dwell together with the descendants of Jacob (Israel) in the same land. This verse highlights the material prosperity of the Edomites and the consequent need for expansion and migration.
The Land Could Not Bear Them:The verse also states that the land where they lived as strangers (foreigners) was unable to sustain them because of their abundant livestock. This suggests that the Edomites had a large number of cattle and other livestock, which required ample grazing land and resources. As a result, they needed to seek out new territories to accommodate their growing wealth and livestock.
Historical and Spiritual Significance:This verse emphasizes the fulfilment of God’s promise to bless Esau with material prosperity (Genesis 27:39‑40). It also highlights the contrast between Esau’s descendants and Jacob’s descendants, who were later known as the Israelites. While the Edomites enjoyed material wealth and expansion, the Israelites experienced periods of slavery and wandering in the wilderness.
