Genesis 37:17

Listen to this article

"And the man said, They are departed hence; for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brethren, and found them in Dothan."

Context:Genesis 37 introduces us to the story of Joseph, the son of Jacob (Israel) and Rachel. Joseph was loved by his father and given a coat of many colours, which made his brothers jealous. In this verse, Joseph’s brothers have left Shechem and gone to Dothan, and Joseph goes after them to find them.

Obedience and Initiative:Joseph’s actions in this verse demonstrate his obedience and initiative. He could have chosen not to go after his brothers since he knew they had ill feelings towards him. However, he chose to obey his father’s instructions and took the initiative to find them. Joseph’s obedience and willingness to take action are admirable qualities.

Trusting God’s Plan:Although Joseph did not know what lay ahead, his journey to find his brothers in Dothan was a part of God’s plan for his life. It eventually led to his eventual rise to power in Egypt and his role in saving his family during a severe famine. This verse reminds us of the importance of trusting God’s plan, even when the path may seem uncertain or difficult.

Sibling Rivalry:The story of Joseph and his brothers is characterised by intense sibling rivalry. The jealousy and resentment his brothers felt towards him eventually led them to sell him into slavery. This verse serves as a reminder of the brokenness within Joseph’s family and the challenges he faced due to his brothers’ actions. It serves as a cautionary tale against envy and bitterness among family members.

Persistence and Perseverance:Joseph’s journey to find his brothers demonstrates persistence and perseverance. Dothan was a significant distance from Shechem, and Joseph had to overcome potential obstacles to locate them. Similarly, in our own lives, we may face challenges and setbacks as we pursue God’s plan for us. Joseph’s determination to find his brothers encourages us to persevere and press forward in the face of adversity.

Application:As we reflect on this verse, we can apply its lessons to our lives. We can strive to be obedient to God’s commands, take initiative when necessary, trust in His plan, seek to reconcile broken relationships, and demonstrate persistence and perseverance in the pursuit of God’s purpose for us

Remember, while this verse provides a specific context and lessons, it is essential to read and study the entire story of Joseph in Genesis to fully grasp the significance of his life and God’s hand at work.
