Genesis 37:18

Listen to this article

“And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him.”

This verse takes place when Joseph’s brothers spot him from a distance while he was coming to meet them. It reveals their negative emotions and actions toward Joseph. Let’s explore the context and significance of this verse in the larger story.

Context:In Genesis 37, we learn that Jacob loved Joseph more than his other sons, which caused envy and bitterness among his brothers. Joseph’s father gave him a coat of many colours as a mark of his favouritism, further intensifying the brothers’ resentment towards Joseph. Additionally, Joseph had been sharing dreams with his family, which implied that he would one day rule over them. This further fuelled their jealousy and animosity towards him.

Study:

  • Jealousy and envy:The verse highlights the brothers’ jealousy and envy towards Joseph. It is important to note that envy is a destructive emotion that can lead to harmful actions. The brothers’ envy blinded them to the love and unity that should have characterised their family relationships.
  • Conspiring against Joseph:The verse reveals the brothers’ wicked plan to kill Joseph. Their jealousy had driven them to an extreme point where they were willing to take the life of their own brother. This plot to slay Joseph demonstrates the depths of their hatred and reveals their moral decline.
  • Implications of sibling rivalry:The story of Joseph and his brothers illustrates the negative consequences of sibling rivalry. Favouritism, envy, and bitterness tore apart their family unity, leading to drastic actions that would have far-reaching effects.
  • Fulfillment of God’s plan:While the actions of Joseph’s brothers were driven by jealousy and hatred, it is important to recognise that God ultimately used these events for His divine purposes. Joseph’s journey from slavery to becoming a ruler in Egypt, as we later see in the story, played a significant role in the fulfillment of God’s plan for the nation of Israel.
  • Lessons on forgiveness and reconciliation:The story of Joseph and his brothers is ultimately a story of forgiveness and reconciliation. Despite the harm his brothers had intended for him, Joseph forgave them when they eventually reunited years later. This serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of forgiveness and the possibility of restoration in broken relationships.

Application:
The story of Joseph and his brothers offers several valuable lessons for our lives today. We should strive to avoid jealousy and envy, as these emotions can lead to destructive actions and broken relationships. Instead, we should cultivate love, unity, and forgiveness in our families and relationships, seeking reconciliation rather than revenge.

  • The story of Joseph and his brothers offers several valuable lessons for our lives today. We should strive to avoid jealousy and envy, as these emotions can lead to destructive actions and broken relationships. Instead, we should cultivate love, unity, and forgiveness in our families and relationships, seeking reconciliation rather than revenge.

Furthermore, the story reminds us of God’s providence and how He can use even difficult and painful circumstances for His ultimate purposes. We should trust in God’s plan, even when it is not immediately clear to us, knowing that He can bring beauty and restoration out of the most challenging situations.

In summary, Genesis 37:18 presents a pivotal moment in the story of Joseph, highlighting the envy and hatred of his brothers. Through this verse and the broader narrative, we can learn valuable lessons about the destructive nature of jealousy, the importance of forgiveness, and the providence of God in our lives.
