Genesis 37:6

Listen to this article

“And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed.”

This verse is part of the account of Joseph, the son of Jacob, and his dreams. In Genesis 37, Joseph had a dream that he shared with his brothers. This dream, along with his subsequent dreams, played a significant role in Joseph’s life and ultimately shaped the course of history for the people of Israel.

Dreams in the Bible:Dreams have held a special significance throughout biblical history. God often used dreams as a means of communication with individuals. In this case, Joseph’s dreams were not ordinary dreams but were divinely inspired visions that carried prophetic meaning.

Joseph’s Dream:In this particular verse, Joseph addressed his brothers and asked them to listen attentively to the dream he had experienced. It is important to note that Joseph’s dreams were not well-received by his brothers because the dreams suggested that Joseph would rise to a position of authority and that his family would bow down to him. This created jealousy and animosity among his brothers, which ultimately led to Joseph’s sale into slavery in Egypt.

Symbolism and Fulfillment:Joseph’s dream held symbolic imagery that represented his future exaltation. In the subsequent verses, Joseph shared another dream, where the sun, moon, and eleven stars bowed down to him. This dream symbolized his father (Jacob), his mother (Rachel), and his eleven brothers. Ultimately, these dreams were fulfilled when Joseph became a powerful ruler in Egypt, second only to Pharaoh, and his family came to him during the famine, bowing before him to seek food.

God’s Providence:Through Joseph’s dreams and subsequent experiences, we witness God’s providential hand at work. Although Joseph faced trials and tribulations, God’s plan was being carried out, leading to the preservation of the people of Israel and the fulfillment of God’s covenant promises.

Lessons for us:This verse teaches us the importance of recognizing and discerning God’s purpose in our lives. Joseph’s dreams were not merely a reflection of his personal ambitions but were part of God’s divine plan. It also reminds us of the importance of humility and the dangers of jealousy and envy, as demonstrated by Joseph’s brothers.

In conclusion, Genesis 37:6 introduces us to Joseph’s dream, which played a crucial role in his life. Through these dreams, we see God’s providence and how His plans were fulfilled in Joseph’s life, ultimately leading to the preservation of the people of Israel. This verse also highlights the importance of discerning God’s purpose, cultivating humility, and avoiding jealousy and envy.
