Genesis 39:23

Listen to this article

“The keeper of the prison looked not to anything that was under his hand; because the LORD was with him, and that which he did, the LORD made it to prosper.”

This verse is part of the story of Joseph, one of the well-known figures in the book of Genesis. Joseph was the eleventh son of Jacob and was sold into slavery by his brothers out of jealousy. However, despite his circumstances, Joseph remained faithful to God, and God blessed him in various ways.

In this particular verse, Joseph had been falsely accused by his master’s wife of attempting to seduce her. As a result, Joseph was thrown into prison. While in prison, the keeper of the prison, or the jailer, observed Joseph’s character and the way he conducted himself. The verse tells us that the keeper of the prison noticed that Joseph was trustworthy and reliable, and he did not need to supervise everything Joseph did. The reason for this was that the Lord was with Joseph, guiding and prospering him.

This verse highlights a significant theme found throughout the Bible:the presence and favour of God in the lives of His faithful servants. Despite the difficult circumstances Joseph found himself in, he remained committed to God and continued to act with integrity. As a result, God blessed him and caused everything Joseph did to prosper, even in the confines of the prison.

This verse serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness and His ability to bring about good even in challenging situations. It encourages believers to remain steadfast in their faith and trust in God’s provision, knowing that He can turn any situation around for His glory.

Joseph’s story eventually unfolds in such a way that he is released from prison and rises to a position of great authority in Egypt, second only to Pharaoh. Through Joseph’s faithfulness, God used him to save not only the people of Egypt but also his own family during a severe famine. This narrative demonstrates how God can use the trials we face for His greater purposes and the ultimate good of those who trust in Him.

In conclusion, Genesis 39:23 showcases Joseph’s unwavering faithfulness to God and God’s faithfulness to Joseph even in the midst of his imprisonment. It serves as a powerful reminder of the divine presence and favour that can accompany the lives of those who remain faithful and obedient to God, even in challenging circumstances.
