“But think on me when it shall be well with thee, and shew kindness, I pray thee, unto me, and make mention of me unto Pharaoh, and bring me out of this house.”
This verse is a part of the narrative in the book of Genesis where Joseph, the son of Jacob, finds himself imprisoned in Egypt. Prior to his imprisonment, Joseph had experienced a series of ups and downs in his life. He was favoured by his father but despised by his brothers, who sold him into slavery. Eventually, he ended up in Egypt and found himself falsely accused and imprisoned.
In this particular verse, Joseph is speaking to two of Pharaoh’s officials who were also imprisoned with him: the chief butler and the chief baker. Both officials had dreams that troubled them, and Joseph, who had been blessed with the ability to interpret dreams, interpreted their dreams correctly. The chief butler’s dream indicated that he would be restored to his position, while the chief baker’s dream revealed that he would be executed.
In Genesis 40:14, Joseph makes a personal plea to the chief butler, asking him to remember him and speak to Pharaoh on his behalf once he is restored to his position. Joseph’s request is rooted in the hope that the chief butler’s influence with Pharaoh could lead to his release from prison.
This verse offers several key points for reflection and application:
- Perseverance in difficult circumstances:Despite facing adversity and being imprisoned unjustly, Joseph maintains his hope and seeks opportunities for deliverance. He doesn’t allow his circumstances to diminish his spirit or his faith in God.
- The power of remembrance and kindness:Joseph asks the chief butler to remember him and show kindness by speaking on his behalf. It highlights the importance of human connections and the potential impact of simple acts of kindness in times of need.
- Trusting in God’s timing:Joseph’s request to the chief butler suggests that he understood that his ultimate deliverance was in God’s hands. While he sought the chief butler’s help, he recognised that God was the one who would bring about his release.
- The sovereignty of God:Throughout Joseph’s story, we see the hand of God at work, orchestrating events for a greater purpose. Joseph’s imprisonment was part of God’s plan to position him for a future role of leadership and provision for his family.
In summary, Genesis 40:14 demonstrates Joseph’s willingness to seek help, his trust in God’s timing, and his understanding of the importance of human relationships. It serves as a reminder to trust in God’s sovereignty even in difficult circumstances and to remain hopeful, knowing that He can bring about deliverance in unexpected ways.
