Genesis 40:19

Posted on 31 July 2023
Listen to this article

“Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thy head from off thee, and shall hang thee on a tree; and the birds shall eat thy flesh from off thee.”

Context:In this verse, we find Joseph interpreting the dreams of two of Pharaoh’s officers who were imprisoned with him in Egypt. One of the officers was the chief baker, and he had a dream that troubled him. Joseph, being gifted with the ability to interpret dreams, was called upon to provide an explanation.

This verse reveals the interpretation given by Joseph to the chief baker. Joseph explained that within three days, Pharaoh would lift up the chief baker’s head from off him, symbolizing his execution. Pharaoh would then hang him on a tree, and the birds would eat his flesh. This interpretation was later fulfilled exactly as Joseph had foretold.

As Genesis 40:21‑22 states, And he restored the chief butler unto his butlership again; and he gave the cup into Pharaoh’s hand: But he hanged the chief baker: as Joseph had interpreted to them.

This Bible passage highlights several significant aspects: Joseph’s prophetic gift: Joseph possessed the ability to interpret dreams, which played a crucial role in his life and the lives of others. This gift originated from God and helped him navigate various circumstances, including his rise to prominence in Egypt.

The fulfillment of dreams: The dreams of the chief baker and the chief butler were fulfilled as Joseph had interpreted. This demonstrates the accuracy and reliability of Joseph’s gift of dream interpretation, reinforcing his role as a messenger of God.

The consequences of the interpretation: The interpretation provided to the chief baker was not favourable; it predicted his execution. This serves as a reminder that not all interpretations or prophecies bring positive outcomes. In this case, it was a warning of impending judgement for the chief baker.

God’s sovereignty: The events in this verse emphasise God’s sovereignty and control over human affairs. The fulfilment of the dreams and Joseph’s accurate interpretations were part of God’s plan, which would eventually lead to Joseph’s rise to power in Egypt.

Overall, Genesis 40:19 presents a powerful example of Joseph’s gift of dream interpretation, the role of God’s sovereignty, and the fulfilment of prophecy. It reveals God’s involvement in the lives of individuals and highlights the consequences that can arise from the messages He imparts through His chosen vessels.
