Genesis 41:18

Listen to this article

“And, behold, there came up out of the river seven kine, fatfleshed and well favoured; and they fed in a meadow.”

This verse is part of the biblical account of Joseph, who was sold into slavery by his brothers and eventually rose to become a prominent figure in Egypt. In this particular passage, Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, has a dream that troubles him, and he seeks someone who can interpret it for him.

To provide some context, Pharaoh’s dream involves seven cows that come up out of the river Nile. These cows are described as fat-fleshed and well-favored, meaning they were healthy and attractive. Additionally, the verse mentions that these cows were grazing in a meadow.

From a biblical study perspective, this verse contributes to the larger narrative of Joseph’s life and the providence of God. Here are a few key points to consider:

Dreams and Interpretation:Dreams held significance in biblical times, and they were often seen as a means of divine communication. Pharaoh’s dream was puzzling to him, and he sought someone who could interpret it accurately. This demonstrates the belief in the power of dreams and the recognition that interpreting them required divine insight.

Symbolism of the Cows:The appearance of seven well-fed cows coming out of the river and grazing in a meadow was remarkable. These cows symbolized abundance, fertility, and prosperity. Their healthy condition represented a time of plenty and suggested that fruitful years were ahead.

Foreshadowing:The dream and its interpretation played a significant role in Joseph’s life. Through this dream, God revealed the impending years of abundance and famine in Egypt. Joseph, who was eventually chosen to interpret the dream, correctly understood it as a message from God and foretold the coming years of abundance followed by severe scarcity. This interpretation would later lead to Joseph’s rise to power and his role in preparing Egypt for the famine.

God’s Providence:The entire story of Joseph highlights God’s providential hand in his life. The dreams and their interpretations were part of God’s plan to elevate Joseph from slavery to a position of power in Egypt. It demonstrated God’s foresight and control over future events, including the upcoming years of abundance and famine. Ultimately, this divine intervention allowed Joseph to save many lives and reunite with his family.

In summary, Genesis 41:18 presents a crucial moment in the story of Joseph, where Pharaoh has a significant dream that Joseph would later interpret. The verse highlights the belief in the power of dreams, symbolizes abundance through the imagery of healthy cows, and sets the stage for God’s providential plan to unfold in Joseph’s life.
