Genesis 41:2

Listen to this article

"And, behold, there came up out of the river seven well-favored kine and fatfleshed; and they fed in a meadow."

This verse is a part of the biblical account of Joseph’s interpretation of Pharaoh’s dreams. In the previous chapter, Pharaoh had two disturbing dreams that troubled him. He dreamt of seven fat cows emerging from the Nile River, followed by seven thin and sickly cows that devoured the healthy ones. This particular verse describes the first part of the dream, where the seven well-favored and fat cows are seen grazing in a meadow.

Let’s delve into the broader context of this passage and explore its significance within the story of Joseph.

Context:In the book of Genesis, Joseph’s story begins in chapter 37, where we learn about his dreams and his subsequent sale into slavery by his jealous brothers. Over time, Joseph’s journey leads him to Egypt, where he is sold as a slave to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh. Due to his faithfulness and God’s favour, Joseph rises in prominence in Potiphar’s household. However, he is falsely accused and imprisoned. While in prison, Joseph accurately interprets the dreams of two fellow prisoners, the cupbearer and the baker. Eventually, Pharaoh has a dream, which brings Joseph before him.

Pharaoh’s Dreams:Pharaoh’s dreams are symbolic and carry a significant message. The seven well-favored and fat cows represent abundance and prosperity, whereas the seven thin and sickly cows represent scarcity and famine. The Nile River was of vital importance to Egypt as it provided water for agriculture and sustenance for the people. Therefore, the emergence of the cows from the river highlights the connection between Egypt’s prosperity and the Nile’s life-giving waters.

Interpretation:Later in the chapter, Joseph interprets Pharaoh’s dreams, attributing them to God’s revelation. He explains that the dreams signify seven years of abundant harvests and prosperity followed by seven years of severe famine. Joseph advises Pharaoh to appoint a wise and discerning man to oversee the collection and storage of surplus grain during the years of plenty, to prepare for the impending famine.

Lessons and Applications:This passage demonstrates Joseph’s wisdom and his ability to interpret dreams accurately. It also emphasizes the providence of God, who reveals His plans through dreams and uses Joseph as a vessel for His purpose. Additionally, it highlights the importance of prudent planning and foresight in times of abundance to prepare for future challenges.

The overall story of Joseph showcases themes such as God’s faithfulness, forgiveness, redemption, and the way He can use individuals in remarkable ways. It also serves as a reminder to trust in God’s sovereignty and to be diligent in our stewardship of resources during seasons of plenty.

Genesis 41:2 sets the stage for the unfolding narrative of Joseph’s rise to power, his role in saving Egypt and his family from the famine, and ultimately, the fulfilment of God’s promises.
