Genesis 41:3

Posted on 31 July 2023
Listen to this article

“And, behold, seven other kine came up after them out of the river, ill favoured and leanfleshed; and stood by the other kine upon the brink of the river.”

This verse is part of the narrative of Joseph’s rise to prominence in Egypt. It occurs during Pharaoh’s dreams, which were troubling him, and he sought interpretation from wise men and magicians but found no satisfactory answer.

In this particular verse, Pharaoh has a dream about seven sleek and fat cows emerging from the Nile River. These cows are then followed by seven other cows that are ill-favored and emaciated. These second set of cows stand beside the fat cows.

Let’s explore the significance and symbolism in this passage:

  • Symbolism of the cows:The cows in Pharaoh’s dream serve as symbols that carry a deeper meaning. In biblical times, cattle were valuable assets and represented wealth, abundance, and provision. The contrast between the fat, healthy cows and the thin, ill-favored cows highlights the dichotomy between prosperity and scarcity.
  • The number seven:In the Bible, the number seven often symbolizes completion or fullness. The repetition of seven cows in this dream signifies that the events are divinely ordained and carry significant importance.
  • The Nile River:The fact that the cows emerge from the Nile River is noteworthy. The Nile was crucial to the prosperity of Egypt as it provided water for irrigation and was essential for agriculture. The Nile River represents Egypt’s lifeline and fertility. Therefore, the emergence of the cows from the Nile emphasizes Egypt’s connection to its agricultural abundance and serves as a focal point for the dream’s message.
  • The juxtaposition of fat and lean cows:The stark contrast between the well-nourished cows and the emaciated ones highlights a future period of plenty followed by a time of scarcity or famine. This dream is a foretelling of the impending events that would later unfold in Egypt, as interpreted by Joseph.

Genesis 41:25-27 (KJV) provides Joseph’s interpretation of the dream, revealing that the seven fat cows and the seven lean cows represent seven years of abundance followed by seven years of famine. Joseph’s interpretation demonstrates his God-given gift of dream interpretation and prophetic insight, as well as foreshadows his future role as a key advisor to Pharaoh.

Overall, Genesis 41:3 sets the stage for the subsequent events in Joseph’s life and highlights the significance of his interpretation, which leads to his exaltation and position of authority in Egypt. It also underscores God’s sovereignty in using dreams and the divine wisdom given to Joseph to shape the course of history.
