Genesis 41:35

Posted on 31 July 2023
Listen to this article

“And let them gather all the food of those good years that come, and lay up corn under the hand of Pharaoh, and let them keep food in the cities.”

Historical Context:This verse is part of the account of Joseph’s rise to power in Egypt. Joseph, having been sold into slavery by his brothers, had been imprisoned but was later called upon to interpret Pharaoh’s dreams. He explained that there would be seven years of abundance followed by seven years of severe famine.

Stewardship and Planning:In this verse, Joseph proposes a plan to Pharaoh to mitigate the impact of the upcoming famine. He suggests that during the years of abundance, they gather and store the excess food to be used during the years of famine. This demonstrates Joseph’s wisdom, foresight, and his ability to manage resources effectively.

Responsibility and Leadership:Joseph’s recommendation highlights the importance of responsible leadership. He recognised the significance of planning ahead and taking necessary steps to provide for the people during difficult times. This verse teaches us the value of leadership that prioritises the welfare and sustenance of the community.

Trust in God’s Providence:While Joseph’s plan was practical and beneficial, it is essential to note that the overall context of Joseph’s story emphasises God’s hand in his journey. It was God who granted Joseph the ability to interpret dreams, ultimately leading to his appointment as Pharaoh’s second-in-command. This verse reminds us that even in times of abundance or scarcity, we should trust in God’s providence and seek His guidance in our lives.

Application to our lives:Genesis 41:35 encourages us to develop a mindset of stewardship and responsible planning. We can apply this principle to various aspects of our lives, such as financial planning, resource management, and even spiritual growth. Just as Joseph’s plan provided for the people’s needs, we should strive to be responsible stewards of our resources and take proactive steps to prepare for the future.

In summary, Genesis 41:35 showcases Joseph’s wisdom and leadership in proposing a plan to store food during years of abundance in preparation for years of famine. This verse teaches us the importance of responsible planning, trust in God’s providence, and the significance of leadership that prioritises the welfare of others.
