Genesis 42:7

Posted on 31 July 2023
Listen to this article

“And Joseph saw his brethren, and he knew them, but made himself strange unto them, and spake roughly unto them; and he said unto them, Whence come ye? And they said, From the land of Canaan to buy food.”

Context:In Genesis 42, we find Joseph, who had been sold into slavery by his brothers, rising to a position of authority in Egypt. Due to a famine, Joseph’s brothers come to Egypt to buy food, not knowing that Joseph is the high-ranking official in charge of distributing provisions.

Recognition and Concealment:When Joseph sees his brothers, he recognises them, but he does not reveal his true identity to them immediately. Instead, he “made himself strange unto them” and spoke roughly to them. This was part of Joseph’s plan to test his brothers and gauge their character and remorse for what they had done to him.

Testing and Transformation:Joseph’s actions in this verse demonstrate his desire to see if his brothers had changed over the years and if they had any regret for their past actions. Joseph wanted to know if they had developed a sense of compassion and had grown in character. Through this testing, Joseph also wanted to assess their attitude towards their father, Jacob, and their younger brother, Benjamin.

Lessons for Today:

  • Forgiveness and Reconciliation:Joseph’s story teaches us the importance of forgiveness and reconciliation. Even though Joseph had every reason to seek revenge, he chose forgiveness and desired to restore his relationship with his brothers.
  • Testing of Character:Joseph’s actions remind us of the value of testing our own character and the character of others. Sometimes, difficult situations reveal true character and provide an opportunity for growth and transformation.
  • God’s Sovereignty:Throughout Joseph’s story, we see God’s sovereignty at work. God used Joseph’s circumstances, including his time in Egypt, to accomplish His purposes. We can trust that God is in control, even in difficult times, and He can turn any situation around for His glory.

Application:As we reflect on this verse, we are encouraged to examine our own hearts and attitudes. Are there areas in our lives where we need to extend forgiveness or seek reconciliation? Are we willing to undergo testing and growth for the sake of our own character development? And, most importantly, do we trust in God’s sovereignty and His ability to work through our circumstances?

Remember, the story of Joseph is not merely a historical account, but it also provides valuable lessons and insights for our own lives. May we learn from Joseph’s example and seek to walk in forgiveness, reconciliation, and trust in God’s providence.
