Genesis 43:7

Listen to this article

“And they said, The man asked us straitly of our state, and of our kindred, saying, Is your father yet alive? have ye another brother? and we told him according to the tenor of these words: could we certainly know that he would say, Bring your brother down?”

In this verse, we find Joseph’s brothers speaking to their father, Jacob, about their encounter with the governor of Egypt, who was, in fact, their long-lost brother Joseph. To understand the context fully, let’s explore the events leading up to this verse.

Joseph’s brothers had previously sold him into slavery out of jealousy, and he ended up in Egypt. By God’s providence, Joseph rose to a position of power and became second only to Pharaoh in authority. Years later, during a severe famine in Canaan, Joseph’s brothers traveled to Egypt to buy grain.

Unbeknownst to his brothers, Joseph recognized them, but they did not recognize him. In order to test their integrity and to fulfill the dreams God had given him, Joseph devised a plan to reveal their true character and determine if they had changed.

Context:In the previous chapters, Joseph had detained Simeon, one of his brothers, and instructed the rest to bring their youngest brother, Benjamin, as proof of their honesty. Reluctant to let Benjamin go, Jacob initially refused. However, as the famine persisted, they eventually ran out of provisions, and Jacob reluctantly agreed to send Benjamin with his brothers.

Genesis 43:7 takes place after the brothers’ return to Egypt with Benjamin. They were being questioned by Joseph’s steward, who was acting as an intermediary between Joseph and his brothers. The steward asked them about their family:particularly if their father was still alive and if they had another brother.

In response to the steward’s inquiries, the brothers recounted the questions they were asked, confirming that their father was alive and mentioning the existence of their younger brother Benjamin. However, they expressed uncertainty about Joseph’s intentions and wondered how they could have known that Joseph would request the presence of Benjamin.

This verse reveals the deep concern and caution the brothers felt due to their past actions and the severity of the circumstances they found themselves in. They were afraid of the consequences and were unsure of Joseph’s motives, not realizing that Joseph was testing their honesty and repentance.

From a broader perspective, this passage reminds us of the importance of honesty:accountability, and the consequences of our actions. It also highlights the mercy and grace of God, as we see Joseph’s desire to reconcile with his family despite the pain they had caused him.

Ultimately, this event sets the stage for the dramatic revelation of Joseph’s true identity and the eventual restoration and reconciliation of Joseph with his brothers and father. It serves as a powerful example of forgiveness:redemption, and God’s sovereignty, even in the midst of difficult circumstances.

Genesis 43:7 is just a small part of the larger narrative in the book of Genesis. By studying the entire story of Joseph and his brothers, we can gain deeper insights into themes such as forgiveness:God’s providence, and the importance of integrity in relationships.
