Genesis 44:3

Posted on 31 July 2023
Listen to this article

“As soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away, they and their asses.”

Context:Genesis 44 is part of the story of Joseph and his brothers. Joseph, who had been sold into slavery by his brothers, had risen to a position of power in Egypt. In this chapter, Joseph tests his brothers to see if they have changed and if they will take responsibility for their actions.

The plot:Joseph instructs his steward to place his silver cup in Benjamin’s sack. The brothers leave Joseph’s house, but Joseph sends his steward after them to accuse them of stealing the cup. The verse in question describes the moment when the brothers are sent away with their donkeys in the morning.

Symbolism of the light:The mention of “as soon as the morning was light” signifies the beginning of a new day. In a broader sense, light often symbolises revelation, truth, and the presence of God. In this context, it may suggest that the events that unfold will bring about an important revelation and a new phase in the brothers’ lives.

Lessons to learn:

  • God’s timing:The mention of morning light reminds us that God works according to His own timing. He orchestrates events in our lives for His purposes, even when we may not understand the reasons at the time. We should trust in His timing and have faith that He is working all things together for our good (Romans 8:28).
  • Facing the consequences of our actions:The brothers’ actions in selling Joseph into slavery had consequences that affected their entire family. The situation they find themselves in now is a result of their past choices. It is a reminder that our actions have consequences and that we should be willing to take responsibility for our mistakes and seek forgiveness when necessary.
  • Testing and growth:Joseph’s actions in this chapter serve as a test for his brothers. He wants to see if they have changed and if they will show remorse for their previous actions. Sometimes, God allows tests and challenges in our lives to refine our character and bring about growth. It is important to respond to these tests with humility, repentance, and a desire to do what is right.
  • Trusting in God’s providence:As the events unfold in Genesis 44, the brothers are faced with a difficult situation. However, this event is ultimately part of God’s plan to bring about reconciliation within the family. It is a reminder that even in challenging circumstances, we can trust in God’s providence and His ability to work all things together for good.

In conclusion, Genesis 44:3 highlights the start of a new day as Joseph’s brothers are sent away in the morning. It reminds us of the importance of trusting in God’s timing, facing the consequences of our actions, undergoing tests and growth, and relying on God’s providence in all circumstances.
