Genesis 45:20

Listen to this article

“Also regard not your stuff; for the good of all the land of Egypt is yours.”

Context:In Genesis 45, Joseph reveals his true identity to his brothers, who had sold him into slavery years earlier. Joseph, through a series of events orchestrated by God, became a powerful ruler in Egypt, second only to Pharaoh. Famine had struck the land, and Joseph’s brothers had come to Egypt seeking food. In this verse, Joseph assures his brothers that they will be provided for and they should not worry about leaving their possessions behind in Canaan.

God’s Providence:This verse highlights God’s providential care over His people. Despite the hardships and trials that Joseph and his family had endured, God had a greater plan in motion. He had elevated Joseph to a position of power in Egypt to preserve the lives of His chosen people during the severe famine. The assurance given by Joseph that all the good of the land of Egypt would be available to his brothers demonstrates God’s abundant provision.

Restoration and Reconciliation:Genesis 45 reveals a powerful story of forgiveness, reconciliation, and the restoration of broken relationships. Joseph, who had every reason to seek revenge against his brothers, chose instead to extend mercy and forgiveness. In doing so, he not only saved their lives but also restored the unity and love within their family. This act of reconciliation is a foreshadowing of the ultimate reconciliation between God and humanity through Jesus Christ.

Material Possessions and Spiritual Blessings:Joseph’s instruction to his brothers to “regard not your stuff” reminds us of the temporary nature of material possessions. Though the brothers had left their possessions in Canaan, they were now entering a land of plenty where they would lack nothing. This serves as a reminder that our ultimate blessings come from God, and our focus should be on spiritual treasures rather than worldly possessions.
