Genesis 46:11

Listen to this article

“And the sons of Levi; Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.”

This verse is part of the genealogical account of Jacob’s descendants as they journeyed to Egypt during the time of famine. Let’s explore the significance of this verse in the broader context of the book of Genesis.

The Sons of Levi:Levi was one of the twelve sons of Jacob (Israel) and the grandson of Isaac and Abraham. Levi’s descendants would eventually become the priestly tribe in Israel, responsible for serving in the tabernacle and later in the temple.

Gershon, Kohath, and Merari:These three sons of Levi mentioned in Genesis 46:11 are the progenitors of the three main Levitical clans. The clan of Gershon was responsible for the transport and care of the tabernacle’s coverings and curtains. The clan of Kohath was entrusted with the holy objects of the tabernacle, including the Ark of the Covenant. The clan of Merari was responsible for the transport and assembly of the structural components of the tabernacle.

The Levitical Priesthood:The mention of Levi and his sons in this verse is significant because it sets the foundation for the establishment of the Levitical priesthood in Israel’s religious system. The Levites were chosen by God to serve Him and the people in a priestly capacity, interceding on their behalf and facilitating their worship.

Foreshadowing the Priesthood of Christ:The Levitical priesthood, although important in its time, was a foreshadowing of the greater priesthood to come through Jesus Christ. The book of Hebrews in the New Testament draws a parallel between the Levitical priests and Jesus, emphasizing that Jesus, as the High Priest, offered Himself as the ultimate sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins.

In summary, Genesis 46:11 introduces the sons of Levi, who would become the ancestors of the Levitical priesthood in Israel. This verse sets the stage for the important role the Levites would play in the religious life of the Israelites and foreshadows the future priesthood of Jesus Christ, who would offer Himself as the ultimate sacrifice for the salvation of humanity.
