Genesis 46:21

Posted on 31 July 2023
Listen to this article

“And the sons of Benjamin were Belah, and Becher, and Ashbel, Gera, and Naaman, Ehi, and Rosh, Muppim, and Huppim, and Ard.”

This verse is part of the account of Jacob’s journey to Egypt with his entire family during a time of famine. In this particular verse, the focus is on listing the sons of Benjamin, who was one of Jacob’s twelve sons.

Benjamin’s lineage:The verse lists the ten sons of Benjamin. They are Belah, Becher, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim, and Ard. These names represent the descendants of Benjamin and highlight the growth of Jacob’s family, fulfilling God’s promise to make them into a great nation.

The significance of names:In the Bible, names often carry meaning and can provide insight into the character or circumstances of the individual. However, in this specific verse, the meanings behind the names are not mentioned. It is worth noting that several of these names are mentioned elsewhere in the Bible, but their significance within this context is not explicitly provided.

The fulfilment of God’s promise:The mentioning of Jacob’s sons, including Benjamin, in this verse reminds us of God’s promise to Abraham that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars in the sky (Genesis 15:5). Jacob’s family’s growth in numbers and their migration to Egypt was part of God’s plan to fulfil this promise.

Unity and identity:The mention of Benjamin’s sons emphasises the unity and identity of the tribe of Benjamin within the larger family of Israel. This unity and identity were crucial as the Israelites developed into a nation and eventually settled in the Promised Land.

It is important to note that while this verse provides genealogical information, it may not have immediate theological or moral implications. However, it serves as a reminder of the faithfulness of God to fulfil His promises and the progression of the narrative of God’s chosen people.
