Genesis 47:12

Listen to this article

“And Joseph nourished his father, and his brethren, and all his father’s household, with bread, according to their families.”

Context:Genesis 47 is part of the narrative of Joseph, who was sold into slavery by his brothers but eventually rose to a position of great authority in Egypt. By this point in the story, Joseph has become Pharaoh’s right-hand man and is responsible for managing the food supply during a severe famine.

Joseph’s Provision:In verse 12, we see that Joseph took care of his father Jacob (also known as Israel), his brothers, and their families by providing them with bread. This act of provision demonstrated Joseph’s wisdom, leadership, and compassion. Despite the previous animosity between Joseph and his brothers, he showed forgiveness and provided for their needs.

Nourishment:The term “nourished” signifies that Joseph not only provided basic sustenance but also cared for the well-being of his family. He ensured they had enough food to sustain them during the famine. This act of nourishment demonstrates the depth of Joseph’s love and commitment to his family.

Importance of Family:Genesis 47:12 highlights the significance of family bonds and responsibilities. Joseph recognised the importance of caring for his father and extended family during times of hardship. This verse reminds us of the biblical principles of honouring and supporting our families, even in challenging circumstances.

Foreshadowing of Christ:Joseph’s provision and care for his family can be seen as a foreshadowing of Christ’s role as the ultimate provider and sustainer of His people. Jesus, through His sacrificial death and resurrection, offers spiritual nourishment to those who believe in Him. Just as Joseph provided bread to sustain physical life, Jesus provides the Bread of Life, which grants eternal life to all who partake in Him (John 6:35).

Lessons for Believers:Genesis 47:12 encourages believers to emulate Joseph’s example by caring for their families and others in need. It reminds us to exercise forgiveness, compassion, and generosity, recognising that our actions can reflect God’s love and provision in the lives of others.

Overall, Genesis 47:12 showcases Joseph’s role as a provider for his family during a time of crisis. It reminds us of the importance of family, the significance of caring for others, and points to the ultimate provision found in Jesus Christ.
