Genesis 47:28

Listen to this article

"And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years: so the whole age of Jacob was an hundred forty and seven years."

Context:To better understand Genesis 47:28, let’s first consider the context. Jacob, also known as Israel, was the son of Isaac and grandson of Abraham. In Genesis 47, we see that Jacob and his family had settled in the land of Egypt during a severe famine. Pharaoh had invited Jacob’s family to live in Egypt, and they were given the land of Goshen.

Length of Jacob’s stay in Egypt:Genesis 47:28 informs us that Jacob lived in the land of Egypt for seventeen years. This statement signifies a significant portion of Jacob’s life, as he lived to be 147 years old.

The significance of Jacob’s time in Egypt:Jacob’s move to Egypt was a pivotal point in the history of the Israelites. It not only preserved Jacob and his family during the famine but also set the stage for the fulfillment of God’s promise to make them into a great nation. During his time in Egypt, Jacob witnessed the growth of his descendants, the twelve sons who would become the heads of the twelve tribes of Israel.

God’s faithfulness throughout Jacob’s life:Throughout Jacob’s life, God remained faithful to His promises. From the time God appeared to him at Bethel and made a covenant with him (Genesis 28:13-15), to the times of trial and hardship he faced, God’s faithfulness was evident. Despite the challenges and circumstances, God continued to protect, guide, and provide for Jacob and his family.

Application:As believers, we can draw several applications from Genesis 47:28. Firstly, we should recognise and appreciate God’s faithfulness throughout our lives, even during challenging times. Secondly, we should be mindful of the passing of time and use our lives to honour God and serve others. Lastly, we can find comfort in the eternal promises of God, knowing that our lives on Earth are part of a larger, divine plan.

Remember that this Bible study is just a starting point, and there is much more depth and richness to be explored in the book of Genesis and the entirety of Scripture.
