Genesis 48:15

Posted on 1 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And he blessed Joseph, and said, God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac did walk, the God which fed me all my life long unto this day”

Context:Before diving into the specific verse, let’s understand the context of Genesis 48. This chapter records the scene where Jacob (also known as Israel) is nearing the end of his life. He calls his son Joseph and Joseph’s two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, to bless them. Jacob blesses Joseph and adopts his two grandsons as his own, making them tribal heads among the Israelites.

Jacob’s Blessing:In verse 15, Jacob blesses Joseph. This blessing is significant because Jacob acknowledges God’s faithfulness throughout his life. He refers to God as the God before whom his fathers, Abraham and Isaac, walked. Jacob recognises that God has been the same faithful God for generations, guiding and providing for his family.

God’s Faithfulness:The phrase “the God which fed me all my life long unto this day” highlights Jacob’s acknowledgment of God’s provision. Throughout his life, Jacob experienced both blessings and challenges, yet God sustained him. Jacob recognises God as the source of his sustenance, both physically and spiritually. This acknowledgment reveals Jacob’s trust in God’s faithfulness and his dependence on Him.

Generational Blessing:Jacob’s blessing is not only for Joseph but also extends to his grandsons, Ephraim and Manasseh. By adopting them as his own sons, Jacob grants them a share in the covenant blessings promised to Abraham and Isaac. This act demonstrates the passing of God’s promises and blessings from one generation to the next.

Application:Genesis 48:15 reminds us of the faithfulness of God throughout generations. Just as God guided and provided for Jacob, He continues to do so for us today. We can find comfort and strength in knowing that the same God who walked with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is the same God who walks with us. Like Jacob, we should acknowledge God’s faithfulness in our lives and express gratitude for His provision.

Trusting God’s Faithfulness:As we reflect on Jacob’s blessing, we are encouraged to trust in God’s faithfulness even in challenging times. Just as God sustained Jacob, He will sustain us as well. We can find hope and assurance in the knowledge that God’s faithfulness endures from generation to generation.

In summary, Genesis 48:15 teaches us about Jacob’s acknowledgment of God’s faithfulness in his life and the passing of blessings from one generation to the next. It reminds us to trust in God’s faithfulness and provision, recognising Him as the same God who walked with our spiritual forefathers.
