Genesis 48:3

Posted on 1 August 2023
Listen to this article

“And Jacob said unto Joseph, God Almighty appeared unto me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and blessed me.”

Context:Genesis 48 is a significant chapter in the book of Genesis where Jacob blesses Joseph’s sons, Ephraim and Manasseh. At this point, Jacob is old and near death. He calls Joseph and shares a message about God’s appearance and blessing.

Jacob’s Encounter with God:In this verse, Jacob refers to an encounter with God Almighty at Luz in the land of Canaan. This event refers back to Genesis 28:10-22 when Jacob had a dream of a ladder reaching to heaven at Bethel (formerly known as Luz). In that dream, God reaffirmed the covenant He had made with Abraham and Isaac, promising to bless Jacob and his descendants.

The Blessing:Jacob’s encounter with God at Luz was significant because it marked the establishment of the covenant blessings that would pass on to future generations. It was a turning point in Jacob’s life, where he realised that God’s promises were being fulfilled in his life.

Trust in God’s Faithfulness:By mentioning this encounter, Jacob reminds Joseph of God’s faithfulness to His promises. Throughout his life, Jacob experienced various challenges and hardships, but he trusted in God’s faithfulness and provision. This testimony serves as a reminder to Joseph and future generations that God’s promises endure through generations.

Spiritual Heritage:The mentioning of Luz and God’s appearance to Jacob emphasises the spiritual heritage that Jacob passes on to Joseph and his sons. Jacob wants to ensure that the knowledge of God’s faithfulness and covenant blessings is not lost but continues to be upheld by the succeeding generations.

Application:This verse reminds us of the importance of passing on our faith and the knowledge of God’s faithfulness to future generations. It encourages us to reflect on our own encounters with God and share them with our families and loved ones. It also serves as a reminder of the significance of God’s promises and His faithfulness throughout history.

In conclusion, Genesis 48:3 highlights Jacob’s encounter with God at Luz and his acknowledgment of God’s blessings. It underscores the importance of passing on faith and God’s faithfulness to future generations. As we study this verse, we can reflect on our own encounters with God and seek to share His faithfulness with those around us.
