Genesis 49:14

Listen to this article

"Isaachar is a strong ass couching down between two burdens."

This verse is a part of Jacob’s blessing to his twelve sons before his death. Each son receives a unique blessing and prophecy about their future. In this particular verse, Jacob is blessing his ninth son, Issachar:

To understand the significance of Jacob’s words, let’s examine the symbolism and context in Genesis 49:14:

  • Issachar:Issachar was one of Jacob’s sons, born to him by his wife Leah. The name “Issachar” means “reward” or “wages.” In this blessing, Jacob speaks about Issachar’s nature and character.
  • A strong ass:The term “ass” in biblical times referred to a donkey. Donkeys were often used for carrying heavy loads and were known for their strength and endurance. This imagery suggests that Issachar possessed physical strength and resilience.
  • Couching down between two burdens:The phrase “couching down between two burdens” can be understood in a few different ways. One interpretation is that Issachar was diligent and hardworking, willing to bear heavy responsibilities. It can also signify that Issachar would find himself in a position of subjugation, serving two powerful forces or nations.

Taking these elements into account, Jacob’s blessing to Issachar can be understood as follows:

  • Jacob acknowledges Issachar’s physical strength and compares it to a strong donkey. This suggests that Issachar would possess the ability to endure and labor diligently. The mention of “two burdens” indicates that Issachar would find himself in a position of serving two dominant forces or nations, possibly facing challenges from both.
  • Overall, this verse portrays Issachar as a hardworking and resilient individual who would carry burdens in service to others. It signifies both the strength and the challenges that would be part of Issachar’s destiny.

It’s important to note that biblical interpretations may vary, and additional insights can be gained by considering other translations, commentaries, and cross-referencing related verses.
