Posted on 1 August 2023
Listen to this article

“But his bow abode in strength, and the arms of his hands were made strong by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob; (from thence is the shepherd, the stone of Israel:)”

Context:Genesis 49 is a chapter that records Jacob’s blessings and prophecies over his twelve sons. In this particular verse, Jacob is blessing his son Joseph. Jacob’s words carry prophetic significance, revealing the future destinies of his sons and their tribes.

Joseph’s Blessing:Jacob’s words in Genesis 49:24 speak directly about Joseph. Jacob highlights the strength and power of Joseph’s bow and the might of his arms, emphasizing that this strength was granted by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob. This points to the favour and blessings Joseph received from God throughout his life.

Symbolism:The “bow” mentioned here symbolizes Joseph’s military prowess and strength. It represents his ability to defend and protect his people. The phrase “his arms of his hands were made strong” suggests Joseph’s physical strength and capabilities.

Divine Assistance:Jacob acknowledges that the source of Joseph’s strength is the mighty God of Jacob. This indicates that Joseph’s abilities were not solely a result of his own efforts but were ultimately granted by God. It highlights the divine favour and assistance that accompanied Joseph throughout his life.

Shepherd and Stone of Israel:The phrase “from thence is the shepherd, the stone of Israel” is a poetic expression used to describe Joseph. The term “shepherd” refers to his role as a leader and protector of his people, just as a shepherd cares for and guides his flock. The “stone of Israel” signifies his significance and importance in the nation’s history and the fulfilment of God’s plans.

Messianic Foreshadowing:Some biblical scholars interpret this verse as a foreshadowing of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. Jesus is often referred to as the Good Shepherd (John 10:11) and the “stone” upon which the Church is built (Matthew 16:18). The verse could be seen as hinting at the future coming of Jesus, who would embody the qualities of a shepherd and become the cornerstone of Israel’s spiritual foundation.

In conclusion, Genesis 49:24 speaks of the strength and power of Joseph, which was granted by God. It acknowledges Joseph’s role as a protector and leader of his people, emphasizing the divine assistance he received. Additionally, this verse can be seen as pointing to the future Messiah, Jesus Christ, who fulfils the role of the Good Shepherd and the foundational stone of Israel’s faith.
