Genesis 49:6

Posted on 1 August 2023
Listen to this article

“O my soul, come not thou into their secret; unto their assembly, mine honour, be not thou united: for in their anger they slew a man, and in their selfwill they digged down a wall.”

Context:Genesis 49:6 is part of Jacob’s blessings and prophecies over his twelve sons. This verse specifically refers to Simeon and Levi, two of Jacob’s sons. Jacob speaks about their past actions and the consequences that follow.

Historical Background:Simeon and Levi were involved in a violent act recorded in Genesis 34. Their sister Dinah was violated by Shechem, a prince of the Hivites. In retaliation, Simeon and Levi deceitfully killed all the men of Shechem’s city. This act brought dishonor upon Jacob’s household and troubled their relationship with neighbouring tribes.

Moral and Spiritual Lessons:

  • Violence and anger:The verse emphasises the consequences of violence and uncontrolled anger. Simeon and Levi’s actions were driven by anger and resulted in the loss of life. It serves as a warning against acting out of anger and seeking revenge, as it can lead to harmful consequences.
  • Honor and unity:Jacob exhorts his soul not to be united with Simeon and Levi in their actions. Their violent deeds brought dishonor to Jacob’s name and the reputation of their tribe. It highlights the importance of maintaining personal and collective honor by avoiding association with those engaged in wrongful acts.
  • Self-will and disobedience:Jacob mentions that they acted according to their self-will or their own desires, disregarding God’s guidance. This serves as a reminder of the need to align our actions with God’s will and not act impulsively or selfishly.

Application:

  • Control anger:The verse calls us to control our anger and not let it lead us into destructive actions. Instead, we should seek reconciliation and forgiveness, following the example of Christ.
  • Uphold honor:We are encouraged to uphold personal and collective honor by avoiding involvement in sinful actions and distancing ourselves from those who engage in wrongdoing.
  • Seek God’s will:It is essential to submit our will to God’s guidance, seeking His direction in all aspects of life. This involves obedience to His commands and surrendering our desires to Him.

In summary, Genesis 49:6 serves as a reminder of the consequences of uncontrolled anger and violence. It emphasises the importance of upholding honor and seeking God’s will in our actions. By learning from the mistakes of Simeon and Levi, we can strive to live in accordance with God’s principles and avoid the pitfalls of self-will and impulsive behaviour.
