Genesis 5:30

Posted on 6 July 2023
Listen to this article

“And Lamech lived after he begat Noah five hundred ninety and five years, and begat sons and daughters.”

Genesis 5:30 is a brief verse in the genealogy of Adam, tracing the lineage from Adam to Noah. It specifically focuses on the life of Lamech, who was a descendant of Adam through the line of Seth.

The Context:Genesis 5 is a chapter that presents a genealogical record, commonly referred to as the “Book of the Generations of Adam.” This chapter provides a genealogy from Adam to Noah, listing the names of individuals along with the ages at which they fathered their children and the total number of years they lived.

Lamech:Lamech was the son of Methuselah and the father of Noah. He is distinct from another Lamech mentioned earlier in Genesis, who was a descendant of Cain (Genesis 4:17-24). Lamech, the father of Noah, lived for 595 years after the birth of his son.

Significance:Lamech’s significance lies primarily in being the father of Noah, who plays a crucial role in the biblical narrative as the one chosen by God to build the Ark and preserve humanity and the animal kingdom during the great flood.

Symbolism:In biblical numerology, numbers often carry symbolic significance. While the number 595 in this verse does not hold a specific symbolic meaning, it is worth noting that numbers like 5 and 9 hold symbolic value throughout the Bible. The number 5 is associated with grace, while 9 is connected to finality, completeness, and judgment. However, in this context, the number is primarily meant to provide a chronological account of Lamech’s lifespan.
