Genesis 50:12

Listen to this article

“And his sons did unto him according as he commanded them.”

Context:Genesis 50 concludes the story of Joseph, who was sold into slavery by his brothers but later became a powerful ruler in Egypt. After the death of their father Jacob (Israel), Joseph’s brothers were fearful that he would seek revenge. However, Joseph reassured them of his forgiveness and God’s sovereign plan.

Obedience and Respect:Genesis 50:12 highlights the obedience and respect shown by Joseph’s sons towards their father’s commands. This act demonstrates the importance of honoring parental authority and fulfilling responsibilities as instructed. Joseph’s authority was respected not only because of his position of power but also due to the wisdom and guidance he had received from God.

Family Unity:The actions of Joseph’s sons reflect the unity and harmony within the family. Despite the brothers’ troubled past and the potential for division, they chose to honor their father’s wishes, maintaining peace and unity within the family. This serves as a reminder of the importance of forgiveness and reconciliation in building and preserving strong family bonds.

Fulfilling Promises:Joseph’s command to his sons may have been related to the promise he made to his father Jacob on his deathbed (Genesis 47:29‑31). In this promise, Joseph assured Jacob that he would bury him in the land of Canaan, where his ancestors were buried. By obeying Joseph’s command, his sons ensured the fulfillment of this promise and honoured their grandfather’s wishes.
