Genesis 7:10

Listen to this article

“And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.”

Context:Genesis 7 describes the account of Noah and the flood. God had seen that the wickedness of man was great on the earth and decided to bring a flood to destroy every living thing except for Noah, his family, and the animals that Noah brought into the ark.

The timing of the flood:In Genesis 7:4, God tells Noah to enter the ark because in seven days, He will cause it to rain upon the earth for forty days and forty nights. Genesis 7:10 indicates that after the seven days had passed, the waters of the flood were upon the earth.

Symbolism of the number seven:Throughout the Bible, the number seven often carries symbolic meaning. It is associated with completion, perfection, and divine fulfilment. In the context of Genesis 7:10, the seven days could represent a period of final preparation before the judgment of the flood. It allowed time for Noah and his family to enter the ark and gather the animals.

God’s patience and warning:The seven-day period also demonstrates God’s patience and grace. God provided a warning and opportunity for repentance before executing judgment. It reveals His desire for people to turn from their wickedness and find salvation in Him. During those seven days, the world had a chance to see Noah’s obedience and respond accordingly.

The fulfilment of God’s promise:Genesis 7:10 marks the fulfilment of God’s promise to bring the floodwaters upon the earth. It shows that God’s word is reliable and trustworthy. The flood serves as a reminder of the consequences of sin and the importance of obedience to God’s commands.

Application to our lives:Genesis 7:10 serves as a reminder of the certainty of God’s promises and the need for obedience and repentance. It emphasises the importance of responding to God’s warnings and opportunities for salvation. It also encourages us to trust in God’s timing and have faith in His plans, even in times of waiting or uncertainty.

Overall, Genesis 7:10 highlights the timing of the flood and the fulfilment of God’s word, while also presenting important lessons about God’s patience, warning, and the significance of obedience in our relationship with Him.
