Genesis 7:3

Posted on 6 July 2023
Listen to this article

“Of fowls also of the air by sevens, the male and the female; to keep seed alive upon the face of all the earth.”

Context:Genesis 7 is part of the account of Noah and the great flood. In this chapter, God instructs Noah to enter the ark with his family and bring with him animals of every kind to be saved from the impending flood. Verse 3 specifically refers to the birds (fowls) and the manner in which they were to be brought into the ark.

Preservation of Species:The verse states that birds were to be brought by sevens, specifically a male and a female pair of each kind. This detail emphasises the preservation of the various species of birds during the flood. By ensuring the presence of both male and female birds, God intended to maintain the ability of these creatures to reproduce and replenish the earth after the floodwaters receded.

Symbolism of Completion:The number seven holds significant symbolism throughout the Bible, often representing completion or perfection. In this context, the instruction to bring the birds by sevens may suggest the completeness of God’s plan for the preservation of creation. God’s attention to detail and His intention to ensure the survival of every species showcases His sovereignty and care over His creation.

Faith and Obedience:Noah’s obedience to God’s instructions is a recurring theme in the story of the ark. Despite the seemingly impossible task of gathering and caring for such a vast array of animals, Noah faithfully followed God’s commandments. By adhering to God’s specific instructions regarding the birds, Noah demonstrated his trust in God’s wisdom and authority.

Application:While the story of the great flood primarily serves as a historical account, it also holds broader lessons for believers today. We can learn from Noah’s obedience, faith, and trust in God’s plan. This passage reminds us of the importance of following God’s instructions even when they may seem challenging or unconventional. It encourages us to trust in God’s sovereignty and His ability to fulfil His purposes in our lives. Overall, Genesis 7:3 highlights God’s care for His creation and His desire to preserve and protect life during the flood. It emphasises the importance of faith, obedience, and trust in God’s plan.
