Genesis Chapter 46

Summery

Genesis 46 continues the narrative of Jacob and his family. Jacob, along with his sons and their households, leaves Canaan and sets out for Egypt. Before their departure, God speaks to Jacob in a vision, assuring him that He will make their journey fruitful and promising to bring them back to the Promised Land.

In Egypt, Jacob’s descendants flourish, as he is reunited with his beloved son Joseph. The chapter provides a detailed account of Jacob’s family tree, listing his sons, grandsons, and great-grandsons who accompany him to Egypt. The total number of Jacob’s household members who migrate to Egypt reaches seventy.

This chapter highlights the fulfillment of God’s promises to Jacob’s ancestors, particularly Abraham. Jacob’s offspring multiply in Egypt, foreshadowing the fulfillment of God’s covenant to make them a great nation. As they settle in the land of Goshen, their arrival marks the beginning of the Israelites’ sojourn in Egypt.
