Genesis Chapter 50

Summery

Genesis 50 concludes the book of Genesis with the account of Joseph’s response to his father Jacob’s death. After mourning, Joseph sought Pharaoh’s permission to bury Jacob in Canaan, as promised. Accompanied by a large company of officials, family members, and servants, Joseph fulfilled this wish and conducted a grand funeral procession. Even the Canaanites observed this display of mourning.

Upon their return, Joseph’s brothers feared retribution for their past treachery. However, Joseph reassured them of his forgiveness, recognizing that their actions were part of God’s greater plan. He comforted them, promising to provide for their families and protect them. Joseph lived to the age of 110 and witnessed three generations of his descendants.

Joseph’s final words to his brothers emphasized God’s faithfulness and instructed them to carry his bones out of Egypt when the Israelites eventually departed. The chapter ends with Joseph’s embalming and placement in a coffin in Egypt.
