Jeremiah 34 contains a message from God to the people of Judah, delivered by the prophet Jeremiah. The chapter begins with the king of Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar, besieging Jerusalem and its cities. Meanwhile, Zedekiah, the king of Judah, receives a warning from God that he will not escape from the Babylonians but will be captured and taken away. Jeremiah is instructed to deliver a message to Zedekiah, telling him that he will die peacefully and mourned by his people.
The chapter then focuses on an issue within the Jewish community: the release of Hebrew slaves. The people had made an agreement to free their fellow Hebrews after six years of service, in accordance with the Law of Moses. However, they had later violated this covenant by forcing their slaves to return to servitude. God reprimands them for breaking their promise, reminding them of His commandments.
