“Your wives, your little ones, and your cattle, shall remain in the land which Moses gave you on this side Jordan; but ye shall pass before your brethren armed, all the mighty men of valour, and help them”
Context: The book of Joshua is named after its central character, Joshua, who succeeded Moses as the leader of the Israelites. This verse comes at the beginning of the book when Joshua was given the charge to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land after Moses’ death. It signifies the transition of leadership and the Israelites’ readiness to possess the land.
Unity and Support: In this verse, Joshua addresses the Reubenites, the Gadites, and half the tribe of Manasseh who were given their inheritance on the eastern side of the Jordan River. Joshua assures them that their families, possessions, and livestock would remain there while they crossed over the Jordan to assist their fellow Israelites in conquering the land on the western side. This demonstrates the importance of unity and support among God’s people. Despite having received their own portion of land, they were called to help their brethren in their battles.
Sacrificial Service: Joshua’s words convey a spirit of selflessness and sacrifice. The men from the tribes on the eastern side of the Jordan were instructed to cross over and fight alongside their brothers. They were to arm themselves and join the rest of the Israelite army in the conquest of the Promised Land. This act of leaving their families and possessions behind displays their commitment to the greater cause of fulfilling God’s promise. It teaches us the value of sacrificial service and the willingness to put others’ needs above our own.
Strength in Numbers: Joshua emphasizes that the men who were to cross over should be “mighty men of valor.” This highlights the importance of having courageous and capable warriors in the midst of the Israelite army. The success of their mission relied on their strength, both physically and spiritually. Similarly, in our Christian journey, we need individuals who are spiritually strong and courageous to support and strengthen one another.
Application: Joshua 1:14 challenges us to consider our commitment to unity, sacrificial service, and spiritual strength. We are part of a larger community of believers, and our actions can have a significant impact on others. We should be willing to support and encourage our fellow believers, even if it requires personal sacrifice. Additionally, we should strive to cultivate spiritual strength and courage to face the challenges and battles we encounter as we fulfil God’s purposes.
