Joshua 1:17

Listen to this article

“According as we hearkened unto Moses in all things, so will we hearken unto thee: only the Lord thy God be with thee, as he was with Moses.”

Historical Context:The book of Joshua is set in the Old Testament, immediately after the death of Moses. Joshua, who had been Moses’ assistant, is now appointed as the leader of the Israelites to lead them into the Promised Land. In this verse, the Israelites are affirming their commitment to obey Joshua as their new leader, just as they obeyed Moses.

Importance of Obedience:The Israelites’ declaration to Joshua emphasizes the importance of obedience to God-appointed leaders. They recognize that their previous success and guidance were a result of their obedience to Moses, and they commit to continuing in that obedience under Joshua’s leadership. Obedience to God’s chosen leaders is vital for unity, progress, and fulfilling God’s purposes.

Submission to God’s Will:The Israelites’ commitment to obey Joshua is ultimately rooted in their submission to God’s will. They acknowledge that the Lord their God was with Moses, and they express their desire for God’s presence to accompany Joshua as well. Their primary focus is on God’s guidance and sovereignty rather than solely on the human leader. This verse reminds us of the importance of recognizing and submitting to God’s appointed leaders, understanding that they act as instruments of God’s will.

Continuity and Legacy:The phrase “only the Lord thy God be with thee, as he was with Moses” indicates the desire for continuity and the passing on of the divine favour. The Israelites understand that their future success is contingent upon God’s presence remaining with Joshua, just as it had been with Moses. This verse teaches us the significance of acknowledging and praying for God’s presence to be with leaders who are called to carry on God’s work, as it ensures the continuity of His blessings and purposes.

Application to our Lives:

  • Recognizing God-appointed leaders: This verse encourages us to acknowledge and respect the leaders whom God has placed in our lives, such as pastors, spiritual mentors, and community leaders. Their authority should be honoured as long as they remain aligned with God’s Word.
  • Obedience and unity: The Israelites’ commitment to obey Joshua highlights the importance of obedience and unity within the community of believers. When we submit to godly leadership, we promote unity and create an environment where God’s purposes can be fulfilled.
  • Prayer for leaders: We should pray for God’s presence and guidance to be with our leaders, just as the Israelites prayed for Joshua. Our leaders need our support, encouragement, and prayers as they fulfil their roles and responsibilities.
  • Continuity of God’s work: Just as the Israelites desired the Lord to be with Joshua, we should seek God’s presence in all areas of our lives and ministries. We should pray for the continuity of God’s work, that His favour and guidance may be evident in the lives of those who succeed us.

In summary, Joshua 1:17 underscores the importance of obedience, submission to God’s will, and recognizing God-appointed leaders. It teaches us to honour and support our leaders, pray for their guidance, and seek the continuity of God’s work in our lives and ministries.
